With Traditional Lap Splicers, the leading edge of the new roll and the trailing edge of the expiring roll
"overlap." A piece of double sided tape holds the two together. In almost all
cases, the expiring roll leaves a splice tail which may case jamming problems or become
severed in the cut-off section leaving a loose piece of paper in the envelope line.
Also, the double thickness of paper, with tape between them, can be a problem in certain
die cutting operations.
The solution to these
potential problems is to "butt-splice" the material. A butt splice is not that
dissimilar to a continuous web in that the trailing edge of the expiring roll is
"butted" to the leading edge of the new roll. The only additional thickness is a
piece of thin, one-sided tape.
